Musewild Ethos & Formulation

The Truth About Fragrance and Dogs

If you ask a veterinarian whether you should spray fragrance on your dog, their honest answer will usually be no. And let’s face it, our dogs don’t care about smelling like wild flora, warm vanilla, or fresh linen. Given the choice, they would much rather roll around in something questionable they found in the yard.

Fragrance in pet care is, at its heart, a human desire. We love snuggling up on the couch with our dogs, bringing them into our bed, and sharing our daily lives with them, so we naturally want that experience to feel and smell fresh and comforting.

At Musewild pets, we don’t believe in hiding behind clever marketing or fake claims. If your goal is 100% natural living, the purest choice for your pet is to skip scents altogether. But if you choose to bring the joy of fine fragrance into your pet’s lifestyle, we believe you deserve a formula built on transparency, intentional ingredients, and zero greenwashing.

The Unregulated Reality of Pet Cosmetics

In the United States, animal grooming products intended solely to cleanse or beautify pets have limited product-specific federal oversight. Human cosmetics are regulated, but most cosmetic ingredients and finished products are not subject to FDA premarket approval, except for color additives. There are surprisingly few official guidelines or legal standards dictating what can, cannot, or should be used in a pet fragrance or grooming product.

This lack of oversight leaves pet professionals and pet parents in the dark, often forcing them to rely on vague marketing claims from companies like "all natural" or "hypoallergenic" and “pet safe” that carry no formal definition, and use loopholes and unregulated standards to make such claims.

The truth is, “all natural” doesn’t mean it’s safe, and “synthetic” doesn’t mean it’s harmful.

How We Set Our Own Higher Standard

When assessing fragrance safety profiles, we evaluate raw materials and usage concentrations in strict compliance with the IFRA (International Fragrance Association) standards. If an ingredient or concentration is considered too harsh or potential-irritating under these global safety thresholds, it has no place on your dog's delicate skin barrier.

Beyond our scents, every foundational ingredient in our pet fragrance mists are chosen with intention to provide a stable and science backed product, and all of our ingredients are sourced and purchased from the USA.

We know that no fragrance product is completely necessary for a dog's survival. But if you choose to elevate your pet's routine with scent, we believe you deserve a brand that takes transparency seriously, setting a rigorous personal standard in an industry that rarely demands one.

The Musewild Formulation Breakdown

We keep our ingredient deck intentionally minimal. Every element in our mists serves a specific purpose, designed to balance safety, stability, performance, and a unique scent experience.

1. Pure Distilled Water (The Foundation)

What it is:

Purified water produced through distillation.

Why it’s here:

Water forms the core of our mist, ensuring the formula is gentle when applied to your pet.

2. SDA-40B 190-Proof Ethanol (The Functional Base)

What it is:

SDA-40B 190-proof ethanol is a high-purity, specially denatured ethyl alcohol used as a solvent in fragrance and cosmetic-style sprays. It helps fragrance materials disperse evenly and allows the mist to dry quickly on the coat. Unlike beverage-grade ethanol, SDA-40B is intentionally unsuitable for drinking. Its standard formula includes trace amounts of tert-butyl alcohol and denatonium benzoate, an intensely bitter agent added to discourage swallowing.

Why we use it:

Fragrance performance & quick dry-down: Ethanol helps create a clear, fine mist, evenly carry fragrance materials across the coat, and evaporates quickly after application without a heavy or oily finish. It is widely used as a solvent in fragrance sprays, colognes, and body-care products for these same functional qualities.

Alcohol-supported self-preservation: At our functional level, it creates an environment that is less favorable to the growth of many bacteria, yeast, and mold.

Why it’s sometimes scrutinized in pet products:

Ethanol is scrutinized because its safety is dose-dependent. Concentrated or repeated topical exposure can dry or irritate skin, its vapor can be irritating to sensitive eyes and airways, and consuming a significant amount can cause ethanol intoxication.

Not all alcohols or alcohol-containing pet products are the same. Many of the strongest veterinary warnings about topical alcohol exposure involve dousing the skin with ethanol, or use of isopropyl alcohol (commonly known as rubbing alcohol) which is more toxic than ethanol and may be found in some flea-control products.

Our formula uses SDA-40B, an ethanol-based fragrance solvent (not isopropyl alcohol) and is intended for limited, external mist application only.

Why amount and application matter: Ethanol-related risk depends on the amount of product consumed or absorbed relative to a dog’s size. A light misting uses only a minimal amount of ethanol, which evaporates quickly from the coat after application and leaves behind a soft, freshly fragranced finish.

3. PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil (The Solubilizer)

What it is:

A solubilizer derived in part from castor oil and modified for cosmetic use.

Why we use it:

Fragrance oils and water naturally separate. PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil acts as a gentle, high-performance bridge, binding aromatic compounds evenly throughout the water base. This ensures every spray delivers a perfectly balanced mist without separating or requiring harsh chemical solvents.

4. Glucam P-20 (The Fixative and Humectant)

What it is:
A naturally-derived cosmetic fluid made from propoxylated methyl glucose ether.
Why we use it:

Fragrance top notes evaporate quickly and alcohol-based sprays can feel harsh on the skin. Glucam P-20 acts as a gentle, high-performance stabilizer, locking in moisture and anchoring aroma compounds so the scent lasts longer without changing its true character.

4. Organic Vegetable Glycerin (The Coat Conditioner)

What it is:

A gentle, plant-derived humectant sourced from organic coconut oil.

Why we use it:

Moisture Retention and Balanced Feel: Glycerin draws moisture into the coat, ensuring the spray doesn’t cause dryness.

5. Phthalate-Free Fragrances (The Artistry)

What it is:

High-grade, phthalate free, cruelty free, and vegan cosmetic fragrance oils diluted at safe recommended usages in compliance with the IFRA (International Fragrance Association).

Why we don't use pure "100% Natural Essential Oils":

Many natural essential oils (like tea tree, eucalyptus, or peppermint) contain potent volatile compounds that can be toxic, harsh, or highly irritating to canine (and human) skin and senses. By utilizing carefully formulated synthetic and natural compounds together, we reduce the chances of skin sensitivity and allergic reactions to deliver a gentle, stable fragrance.
